The first thing any owner should do to stop dog aggression is socializing the dog with other animals from his first days as a puppy. Introducing your puppy to stable and obedient dogs for playtime is crucial to preventing aggressive behavior. It’s actually the way they can learn from an older animal what proper dog behavior is. Socialization teaches the dog that other animals are not a threat to him and there is no need to defend his master, his territory, or himself.

If a dog is starting to showing aggressive tendencies, it is important that you stop dog aggression immediately, each and every time it occurs. You never want to allow your dog to get away with this kind of dangerous behavior. While it is not a long term solution, dogs can be fitted with a muzzle or head collar as a training method to stop dog aggression.

A means to stop dog aggression is via focused training which will help tune the dog on to the directions of the master instead of concentrating it on the other dogs. When another animal confronts the dog, his focus is diverted to obeying the command issued by the owner, such as ‘sit’ or ‘down’, and not directed at attacking another dog. Dogs pick up on the slightest form of panic or anxiety exhibited by their owner, so the owner should be aware of the signals he may possibly be sending to the dog, no matter how insignificant those feelings may seem. This helps stop dog aggression, as the owner is basically the pack leader, and the dog will follow whatever cue is given by the owner. Concentration is a critical part of training for any dog; once he learns this skill, the owner can easily divert his attention when other animals are around by signaling the dog to receive a treat. This doggy treat may be tossed on the ground and the dog may be ordered to locate it, in such a way distracting the dog from the other dog, and helping to stop the dog aggression in advance of it beginning.

You are the master of a beautiful and loving dog. Then one day the animal appears to turn on you and becomes aggressive towards you. Actually, there are 3 types of hostile attitude, which may be interconnected quite closely.

1.    Possessive Aggression – The dog is defending what it considers belongs to him. Things such as food, a favorite toy or some innate object.
2.    Territorial Aggression – The K-9 is protecting what it perceives to be its territory. This may not be restricted to the interior of the home or the yard. In fact if you walk your animal on a leash it may consider anywhere it has marked with urine as its own territory.
3.    Protective Aggression – The canine will demonstrate this type of hostile behavior, towards other animals and humans, when it perceives a danger towards itself or the pack. Again remembering that the dog may well consider the family members as part of its pack.

One form of belligerent attitude which catches many pet owners off guard, when it happens, is known as domination aggression. This is when the dog feels that it is the “Boss” of its empire, including all the family members. In other words it feels that you are subservient to it in the overall pecking order. The behavior may well come forth as you try to move the brute, from your favorite recliner and it decides not to move. When this occurs the dog may snarl, growl, snap or even bite if you permit it to do so.

Each of these aggressive behaviors can be a danger to you and your family. However,   with the proper advice by a competent authority, you will soon discover the facts about dog aggression.

The first thing you need to do is understand why this aggression occurs. Firstly, this behavior can be common for certain types of dogs out in the wild. It can be difficult to get rid of these inborn habits. Another reason is because the dog might feel territorial. He wants to keep what is his — his. Another issue might be that he is unfamiliar with his surroundings, and is skittish about them.

You may think you’re in the clear if your dog doesn’t have these symptoms, but it happens that some dogs develop aggression later on. Keep your eye out for behaviors that might be considered aggressive to see if they build. If your dog’s demeanor changes, then aggression might develop.

Your dog may feel like he rules the roost, so you need to ensure that the dog realizes you are in command, and you are the authority. It’s important to never back down and never treat the dog like he is the ruler.

Other dogs are beyond these beginning stages — which can be quite serious. He might attack or hurt someone, so this needs to be dealt with right away. You can hire a dog trainer, or choose to get rid of the dog if this becomes an issue — especially if you have young children in the house.

At the same time, it’s important not to give up on your dog if you feel like there is hope. Keep on top of things and educate yourself as much as possible. Keep your dog fit and healthy, and consider how things are affecting your dog. Beyond that, examine specific requirements that your particular breed of dog has.

Just be sure not to abuse your dog or try to fight back. This will just cause the problems to escalate, and is not healthy for you or the dog. It is all about finding effective methods, and maintaining your cool in establishing your role as the leader.
