Some Important Reasons Why A Ferret May Bite

By ftsauthor On July 6, 2010 No Comments

It is not uncommon for a ferret to bite and new ferret owners should be aware of this. But before you get nervous and decide not to get a pet ferret you should know that most reasons are not something to worry about.

Most reasons for ferret biting are small and can be dealt with easily. When you know why they bite you can take the steps to eradicating it and getting a more loving and caring ferret.

The Youthful Biter

Youthful over-enthusiasm is the number one cause for ferrets biting. Young ferrets, particularly if they are siblings, will have a tendency towards rough playfulness with plenty of nipping and biting. This isn’t one thing to worry about, unless it gets particularly heated.More at ferrets

What does have to be sorted out, early on is their dedication to incorporate their owners in the play, by biting you the way in which they’d bite a fellow ferret.

There are numerous methods to stop a ferret from biting, however the main factor to make sure, is that you just don’t use any aggression in the direction of your pet. At most, you should drag them lightly across the floor to discourage bad behavior. That is

Ways To Keep Your Ferrets Completely Free From Harm In Your Living Area

By ftsauthor On June 24, 2010 No Comments

Most ferret owners are perfectly aware of the potential problems that face their ferret if it were to get outside. But many do not realize that there are also potential problems inside the home that can be very serious. It is a very good idea to ensure that you have made your home safe for your pet to avoid a potentially serious scenario from occurring.

Do not worry too much about these problems though. We will look at some ways you can make your home great for any pet ferret.

Ferrets and Household Burrowing

Ferrets will sneak into the smallest possible holes, at any given moment. It’s an instinctive factor for them. If they discover a gap in between furnishings, flooring or partitions, they’ll be in there like a shot. This may lead to a variety of problems for the ferret.
Check out care for your ferret.

Firstly, they could get exposed to electrical cables, in wall or ground cavities. The risk to a ferret is increased by the fact that they like to chew things, not understanding that chewing on a cable might send them a shock of over 200 volts.

Secondly, your ferret might get stuck within the spaces that they

How To Prevent Ferret Smell From Attacking Your Senses

By ftsauthor On May 20, 2010 No Comments

Does your ferret smell terrible? They say that ferrets have the most unpleasant smell among any other pets. I would have to disagree. They are just as smelly as all the other animals given different conditions. Is it possible to turn your ferrets into fragrant smelling pets? Yes, of course. Just like any other pets, ferrets need to be nourished and cared for properly in order to eliminate their unpleasant odor.

Give them a bath at most once a month. Use soap and shampoos that are mild and gentle. Take note of this: avoid too much bathing. It is not good for them and it would not do any help in getting rid of their odor. Clean their ears regularly.

Accumulated earwax contributes a lot to its awful ferret smell. Use a damp cloth or cotton to take away the dirt from its ears. You should do this at least once a month. It is also best to confine them in cages that are wide, where they can move freely. Make sure that air can pass in and out of the cage. Don’t put them in glass confinements. The best cages are the ones that are made

Teaching Your Ferret Tricks – The Basics

By ftsauthor On May 19, 2010 No Comments

The principle in teaching most forms of living organisms is practically the same, teaching your ferret trick included. In undergraduate Psychology, we’ve been tasked with not only training human beings but also animals. In this light, it’s highly applicable to use repetition as the main tool in getting your pet to do ferret trick. The main factors to consider when teaching anyone or any creature for that matter are the following:

a. Language
b. Intelligence
c. Interests

Language could either be a barrier or an aid when it comes to teaching humans. In animals, language is a barrier in most of the cases. Some theorists would say that animals with relatively high intelligence understand human language and words. Others would point to the distinct sound that an utterance could make that an animal might link to a repeated gesture. Hence, it is best to use words that are very distinct from each other when verbally training your ferret. For example, you shouldn’t use “works” with “words” to denote two different actions.

Ferrets respond to verbal commands like dogs do. Some might say the same but to a lesser extent than dogs. Mix verbal commands with repetitive gestures of approval or disapproval. For

Pet Ferret Losing Hair? Discover Why And Possibly Save Its Life

By ftsauthor On May 19, 2010 No Comments

Is your ferret losing hair? It could mean one of three things. First it could mean that your ferret is merely having its annual fur shedding. Second, it could be that your ferret pulled its own hair (like in pregnant ferrets), or was caught in a little rough ferret fight. Third, it could be losing hair because it is sick.

Let’s start with the first. Ferrets, like most furry creatures are known to regularly shed their fur. This is their body’s natural way of cleaning fur worn out by constant activity and exposure to the elements. You’ll know that this is the annual fur shedding simply when it grows back on. You’ll find that the fur that grows back on is better and more attractive.

Second, pregnant ferrets have a tendency to be moody. One of the things that they do is they pull their own fur as if to emphasize their discomfort while undergoing pregnancy.

Lastly, when aged ferrets lose hair, it’s not because they are going bald as humans do. It’s most likely because they are affected with adrenal disease. You’ll know when your ferret has adrenal disease not only by observing whether it’s losing hair, but also through several
