Here Is Why You Should Brush Your Dog’s Teeth

By Jerry J. Jansen On November 10, 2009 Under Pets

No canine disease is more prevalent than periodontal (dental) disease.  It affects nearly every dog – and is also the disease that is treated least often.  It is considered too much trouble to brush a dog’s teeth daily, but there is evidence that regular brushing is absolutely the best thing you can do to prolong your dog’s life.

Dogs in the wild avoided these problems with regular chewing on the bones of their prey.  Our loveable companions don’t get to do much of that kind of thing anymore, opting instead for a less-exciting, but more reliable domestic diet.  But plaque formation and the resultant tartar and gum disease that inevitably follow have serious, long term consequences for your dog’s health.

As dental disease progresses in your dog, the gum and bone tissue that holds their teeth in place begins to loosen.  The disease progresses until what was simple bad breath is now major tooth loss and infection.

You can stop this progression of periodontal disease with a regular dental care plan.  Really, it is not as hard as it seems at first.  You can slowly train your dog to accept, and eventually even look forward to regular brushing of the teeth.  It sounds crazy, but its true – once they are trained, dogs love to have their teeth brushed.

The key is introducing the process slowly over time.  You need the right canine specific supplies, like proper brushes and dog tooth paste.  All of us want to be responsible dog owners – it’s time we all considered making regular dental care part of that responsibility.
